CARMAGEDDON
A relatively open world you can explore and demolish while driving in your car, racing against others or disregarding the track was a huge revelation for us back then. Sure , its elements were already present or implied in other racing and non-racing games, but it is the sum of these ideas and the presentation that made CARMAGEDDON a legendary game. It is gory, funny, replete with out-of-this-world characters and pimped vehicles with crazy add-ons that help you score destruction bonuses, Carmaggedon was a bold mainstream venture into the unknown that defied the racing genre and its narrow confines where racing track was god. Finishing the race meant either clean racing , or destroying cars and property or killing all people in the streets.Sure, its outdated graphics might belittle its importance, but its pioneering concept inspired hundreds of games in and outside racing genres, most important being the original GTA. Loads of fun , even today
Oh, and featuring Fear Factory's music in the game was the most natural thing to do at that time :)

PAPERBOY
They don't make them like they used to. Ok, not true, but still - 80s and 90s are replete with oddities that made your usual genre of preference a unique gaming experience. Paperboy does exactly what it says on the tin, and not only will it cater to those Generation Xers who knew exactly what it meant to flip a burger or deliver newspapers to "learn to appreciate the value of money" and afford a new 8bit or 16bit gaming system, but it will also appeal to Millenials, and not just to those Millenials who search for gaming document of days gone by.
The premise is simple- a paperboy has to deliver his round and throw papers to as many houses of subscribers without being bit by dogs, or hit by a myriad of moving objects, cars, carts, raving neigbours, breakdancers, toys etc. With some time needed to get acquainted with controls and the scrolling, it plays well and you slowly grow to like evading death traps while trying to keep Daily Sun's readers happy. Even if you do get fired , you get fired to an awesome soundtrack playing in the back.
One can easily of a counterpart from the 90s it inspired. Less death and less guns , though.
And, uhm, don't play the Commodore 64 version , it's really bad.

METAL SLUG
Does humour belong in music and games? It certainly does as it distorts and makes fun of a canon developed around an approach. Metal Slug is no exception - instead of coming up with an entirely different concept of a side-scrolling shoot 'em up, the game makes fun of our herd-mentality understanding of wars that others fight somewhere in some developing countries. The comedy is implied in derision, in the awkward movements of the characters, their fear of losing lives in a battlefield that gets masked by their love for carnage and war toys, the thin storyline that cartoonish bodycount scenes try to make up for, the background that resembles a HOPA game that supports the bodycount approach - it's all hillarious and works incredibly well. The gameplay itself is addictive, the controls are just smooth enough to keep you glued to your seat while being sluggish enough to irk you. It is also one of those games that become even more interesting in a 2-player session as you can now both recreate your childhood dominated by cultural heroes of cheap animations and movies (wrestlers,MOTUs,Cover Ups, Rambos, Commandos and all those other moments in popular history of the 80s that other games had immortalized as well). Every bromance naturally has to include jumping on boats, wearing machines and wreaking havoc upon a made-up world. Another few thousand coins and your muscle memory reclaimed and you're there.

BATTLEZONE
This game was the first to drop the vector graphic bomb on the gaming world- nothing was the same afterwards. It still looks and plays beautiful and may tickle even a present-day kid's curiosity with just enough sensory data and beauty to try it.And by beauty I mean being able to take any screenshot while playing and use it on a contemporary synthwave/electronica album coverart before any other design. I definitely see the smooth vector display inspiring the makers of the original Tron movie as well. The game screen is divided to give the illusion of space and shooting UFOs , tanks and missiles invokes just enough of a wargod in you to be in a state of constant excitement while playing. No wonder it stirred quite a buzz in the day.
Battlezone shouldn't be admired for its historic value but for the very play value that made it a gem among gems.

BULLY: SCHOLARSHIP EDITION
The game is unique and skillfully made,I'll give them that. The story is cleverly built, the characters are well-outlined , though quite archetypal, and the narrative needs them to properly unfold. I understand trying new thing in games is a thing to aspire to, but I've never understood this kind of morally reprobate titles that some software houses simply excel at making. BULLY attracted a lot of attention for its concept and playability and its several re-released versions proved its grasp over players. But the question remains: who benefits from playing such a game? Whether you were bullied or a bully at school or a lone wolf who silently observed what was going on around them you feel pain upon playing this game- very few people like reliving their high school days. If you're in high school and have already taken up a specific role at either side of this spectrum and you aspire to up the social ranks at school, this game can hardly be a training simulation for you. I guess it could only be an interesting experience for girls who would like to try being a boy bullying and fighting other boys , making out with girls or boys, and doing what they want. Otherwise , no excuse can be made for fighting violence with violence.
I'll go and play some Mikie on my good ole c64 right now for comparison.

TOKYO JUNGLE
Another non-classifiable game that managed to break the mould of the stale action game genre. It's incredible how justifiable animal aggression combined with quirkiness and comical aspects of the game makes this an extremely enjoyable gaming experience. The food chain and everything it dictates in animals entertains us and we readily take up the role of an animal fighting for its survival You can choose one of the species left in the streets of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo where humans are no more, be it a dog, cat, a herbivore or carnivore that escaped from the zoo etc. There are many things to take into account and master as you go along- attack, evading and hiding moves and manoeuvres against other animals , mating and securing the area for your offspring while your computer years swoosh past you, adapting, looking for food, herbs etc. Naturally, each animal has its weaknesses and strengths , and restarting the game you had no high expectations for to begin with with another animal is what gives you a different perspective that makes this game definitely worth your while

GOAT SIMULATOR
A true ode to absurdity of today's gaming industry and a fine example of sheer brilliance this is ! Aren't we tired of playing GTAs, inflicting pain on other human beings in our digital surroundings and having a vast terrain to indulge ourselves in some well-earned anti-social behavour , and while we're at it, playing a franchise that's almost 20 years old? The GOAT SIMULATOR laughs at the staleness of the current gaming industry that hides behind proven titles ,being too afraid to try anything new. So be a goat and do damage and hurt people , you won't feel the same as IF you lead a human protagonist. Strangely enough, it does look like the goat is either on drugs (ragdoll physics) or being seriously affected by some airborne agents -how do we fail to perceive the same rabies in humans while we play out GTAs? It only takes a "joke prototype from an internal one-month game jam"(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goat_Simulator ) to show how boring and repetetive the gaming mainstream is.
